If you want to become a police officer or criminal investigator, you should get a 4 year college degree if you can. Choose a major that interests you, that is marketable, and that could be useful for police work. There are many majors that are good for investigators. English, forensic science, and psychology are some majors to consider. Get the highest grade point average that you can. Participate in a couple extracurricular activities such as criminal justice club, student government, or sports. Consider trying to get an internship with a police department. Do some regular volunteer work. Don’t do anything illegal. Maintain a good reputation. To become a police detective, you have to become a police officer first. Most police departments require officers to work patrol for at least 2 (usually more) years before being eligible to become a detective. If you want to become a detective, you should be the best police officer you can. Maintain an excellent record and reputation as an officer.
