How do I photograph children sports events legally to sell the pictures to the parents?

January 31st, 2013 2 comments

I don’t want any model release problems, but I know I can’t get every kid’s parents’ signature.

How do other professional photographers do it?

My son takes pictures of kids in Pee Wee and High School sports events. He has a magazine in which he posts the pictures…he does not have to have permission if it is a public event.

I taught drill team for many years and we had different people over the years that took pictures at the event…then set a table up outside the gate and sold these pictures to the parents and friends of these kids, the following week. They did make money, I’m sure…. no one ever complained and all were excited to see and purchase the pictures.

Advice:
1. Don’t price them too high. These parents are out so much money for the sport itself, plus refreshments, and gate. Also, there are those parents without jobs or strapped financially and are really hurt when they aren’t able to afford pictures of their children.

2. Action pictures are great…but those expressions on the kids faces during the games are priceless.

3. If it’s at a school event…I would suggest getting permission from the Booster Club. Maybe offer free copies of the pictures for the annual..

4. Also, offer to take pictures of the kids with their parents or "best friends."

Good Luck!

what is the difference between and Audio Engineer and sound designer?

January 19th, 2013 2 comments

I know about the AES and i’ve been reading up on the sound designers. I was wondering first off what is the difference between the two of them (Audio Engineers and sound designers)? What do each of them do? Are they involved in the Film, Music, Video Gaming industry? What major do I need to earn in college to work as each of them?

Thank you very much.

A Sound designer works mostly in theater and movies and yes video games, they create sounds That emphasize a particular action or event. Foley artists are sound designers in a sense. While audio engineers are the people who record the sounds created by a sound design engineer. I may be wrong but I think not, as a video producer (mostly Green screen music video) I have delt with Foley artists who have referenced themselves as sound design engineers. As far as school I can’t help you with that all I’ve learned has been in the business I started as a musician, in a one hit wonder band, toured Europe, Austraila, Canada and the USA. When the band lost popularity I had a keen interest in the studio sessions we had.I worked many years studying at home while working as a builder, slowly building my studio, learning audio and video along the way I have a small independant studio and do everything from recording local bands, video tapeing weddings and sports events, to doing music videos for cable TV and local TV stations. My advice is not to do it my way and go to school,I also had an interest in being a Foley artist that would be quite an interesting occupation

What’s the best kind of DSLR for sports photography?

June 17th, 2012 8 comments

I’ve been looking into buying a DSLR camera, and I’ve spent a while looking through reviews and such, but I’m not really sure whether I should be getting a canon or nikon. I’ve heard good things about both, and bad, but I’m not sure which one will be better for what I want to do. I want to use it for sport’s photography (mostly horse shows and action kind of portraits – I’ve been currently using a basic digital camera for all of this).

So I need help deciding exactly what I should go for, and then what kind of lens. I don’t want to spend a lot of money, considering I have to buy this myself, but I’m not too concerned about prices.

canon are used by 90% of sport fotogs, because they make the big white lenses you see at sports events

so get say a 40d and a 800 or 600mm to fit it – thats what 90% of pro sports shooters use

Great Ways for Locating Sports Event Tickets

June 10th, 2012 No comments

When looking to purchase sports event tickets there are many option available.   Each option has advantages and disadvantages such as price, timing and ease of locating.   For someone who money is not a concern finding great seats quickly is a very simple task.   For someone who is looking to save a lot of money and still want great seating to a premium event the search may become frustrating.   These are some tips which show all the options available and may help you secure your sports event tickets.

The first option is always the best course of action.   This would be to locate the venues box office and call the earliest possible on the day the tickets go on sale.   You may use the Internet to search for say “New York Yankees Ticket Sales” and find the date, time and phone number for when the sports event tickets go on sale.   You will want to call the box office and may spend a lot of time trying to get through to secure the tickets to the event.   This option offers you great face value pricing and the disadvantages are that you may not get through and end up with less then desired seats.   The event may be so far in advance that the game you have tickets to can be a bad match up or not one of the great games of the season.

The next option is to use a ticket broker to purchase your sports tickets.   This way of purchasing sports events tickets may cost an average of thirty percent more over face value, but will guarantee the seats you desire, last minute and no risk of a fake ticket.   When locating and purchasing tickets through a broker ensure they are licensed and make sure you call or email for any promotional codes which may be used through checkout.   These codes can save you ten percent or more and sometimes eliminate the service charge.

The above two examples are the extremes of purchasing sports event tickets.   One will save you money but will not guarantee great seats to a great event.   The second will guarantee you these but the cost in price may be to much, especially for a popular premier event.   These tips will help you get the best of both worlds.

Other Options For Locating Sports Event Tickets

Using the Internet is a great way to locate sports event tickets for sold out and popular venues last minute.   Many times people buy tickets in advance and then have to cancel or not be able to attend.   Auction sites are a great place to first search for tickets and many can be had at face value.   Try to locate forums and groups related to “baseball” or “New York Yankees” these groups will be loaded with fans of your team and often post available tickets they are trying to sell.   If there are no tickets posted join the forum and post the sports event tickets you are trying to locate.   There is a nice chance someone will help you out and at face value.

Some last hope options would be to use a scalper to attend the event.   This is of course a horrible way to go about buying sports event tickets.   The chances for being taken advantage of are dramatic and even if the tickets are legitimate odds are you will pay as much as a ticket broker anyway without the guarantees a broker provides.   Instead, if you arrive at the event without tickets hoping to find some extras, try going to the will call booth and asking if any sports event tickets are available from cancellation.   If there are non left over, wait there and ask as people come to pick up their sports event tickets.   Many times these people will have an extra ticket or two that they want to sell for face value do to their company not being able to attend.

The Vast Political Landscape Of Sports

May 26th, 2012 1 comment

Politics directly related with economic issues, influence the course of action one country might choose against another and certainly affect the role of sports, since they are a vital part of a nation’s role in the global scene. Through boycotting sports events or using athletes for propaganda purposes, individual countries have tried over past practices to impose their political views and affect the world’s understanding. But especially because of the immense public’s interest in international athletic events, influencing political views and gaining valuable exchange power becomes an important issue on a nation’s sport agenda, while the danger of engagement in ‘country-battles’ in the international relations field, does not always count as a serious disadvantage.

At the same time, the commercialism that accompanies spectator sports gradually engulfs both amateur and professional events. By the late 20th century, the televising of athletic events had made sports as the ‘new’ big business. On the other hand, the expanding public concern on personal physical health led to mass participation, not necessarily competitive, in sports like running, hiking, cycling, martial arts, and gymnastics. Athletic activity by women expanded, especially after political action in the 1960s and 1970s opening close doors of the past to many forms of competition and an increased share of public funding for sports.

Private interests for profit and publicity work alongside with more global issues like economic integration and free trade, and as they have already proved they will surely continue to affect sports future role. Countries use sports either to impose their economic power over others, or to elevate their current one. Due to sports’ great costs, governments engage themselves in promoting and supporting these economic needs by authorising special public monetary programs or by seeking private financing (lecture notes). Corporate sponsorships are today a reality, as companies spend about $6 billion annually sponsoring activities ranging from the Olympic Games to the World Cup. The popularity of sponsored events is increasing due to several reasons. They enhance the reputation and image of the sponsor, they provide a focal point for marketing efforts and sales campaigns, and they generate publicity and media coverage. More cost-effective than advertising, sponsorships include prestige and at times target a worldwide audience. Broadcasting rights, ticket sales, merchandising, and sponsorships, are the main reasons of sport’s unique role for a country’s strategy.

Historically proven, sport has acted as a liaison between nations and contributed to their evolution. Beginning with the sociological, psychological and physiological aspects of the human nature, sport has gained the praise of people worldwide, as it has contributed to their well being. Group-oriented, since in order to be a winner one has to compete, sport brings people closer together and generates team-spirit along with mind and physical awareness. Moreover, living today in the information age, sport experts believe that sport is greatly influenced by the actions of individual nations, as well as by the international trends that influence the world economy. As sport is always a spectacle, sport athletes have become professional ambassadors that through them their country’s culture is promoted and their achievements contribute to its fame. Sports in this global society has become lately an issue of great concern and studies worldwide provide valuable information about the political, geographical, economic, cultural, social, aesthetic and historical aspects of sport that will ‘shape’ its future role.

Betting on Sports Events

May 20th, 2012 5 comments

My sports survey shows that betting on the outcome of local and national sporting contests is the number one illegal form of gambling in the United States-illegal off-track race betting is second. This great upsurge in sports betting is due primarily to extensive television sports coverage on all sorts of sporting events and the great team expansion of professional football, baseball, basketball and hockey. Today about 60 million Americans are wagering approximately $30 billion yearly on all sorts of amateur and professional sporting contests. My New York City sports survey agrees with the one conducted by the Oliver Quayle organization for the city of New York. Both estimates state that New York City”s sports fans bet over $1 billion yearly.

About half, or $15 billion, of the total national sports handle was wagered with friends and acquaintances in bets ranging from a dollar to several. thousand dollars. These private wagers on sports and other events rank in volume as follows: football, baseball, basketball, hockey, boxing, golf and political elections, and such skill contests as bowling, horseshoes, Checkers, Chess, billiards, pool and Teeko.

The remaining $15 billion is wagered each year by countless millions of Americans with thousands of sports bookmakers and hundreds and hundreds of horse bookies. The books retain about 4¢ of each dollar they handle, gross revenue on the $15 billion of $600 million. About 60% of this goes for operational expenses-salaries, gamblers” losses not collected, phone charges (one such bookie is known to spend $10,000 a month on phone calls in order to operate his trans-country sports business) and graft paid to corrupt police officers and politicians. This leaves a net profit of $240 million. One example of how important sports betting in this country has become is a Federal investigation and trial of the operators of a sports office in Terre Haute, Indiana. The government subpoenaed 175 of the country”s big time bettors-a list which included several multimillion¬aires, movie people, hotel owners and other business tycoons. The evidence indicated that some of these bettors wagered as much as $25,000 on a single football game.

SPORTS OFFICES AND BOOKMAKERS

There are now about 4,000 bookmakers in America who handle sports wagers exclusively, most of whom will not take horse-race bets. Two of these, both big ones, are women.
In addition, there are more than 300 sports offices. A sports office is a combine or syndicate of three or more of the top sports bookmakers who have joined together so as to be able to handle the sports betting of the nation”s biggest bettors. As a rule, the smallest bet these offices will accept is $100 on a single contest, the largest, $20,000. But this $20,000 maximum limit is sometimes upped for special customers; and for the Super Bowl and World Series play the sky is the limit.

The day”s handle for one of these offices may run from a low $50,000 to a high of $500,000 or more.
Baseball sports betting accounts for about 40%, or $6 billion of the bookies” yearly sports handle; football, about 45% or $6.75 billion, and basketball, hockey, prizefights and state and national political elections, 15% or $2.25 billion.

The bettors who patronize the big time bookies or sports offices are tens of thousands of people in all walks of life: industrialists, politicians, judges, lawyers, stock brokers and manipulators, oil and movie magnates, as well as Numbers operators, bookmakers, casino operators, racketeers and other easy-money boys.

Most of the betting online involving the big bettor and the bookie or sports office is conducted by phone and courier. The courier, or runner, merely collects from the losers and pays the winners. This is done strictly on a cash basis-"No maps (checks) accepted." If the sports office and the big time bettor are in different states the winner of a big wager (bookie or player) must travel to the loser to collect.

Betting conversations by phone are usually in code, and no names are ever mentioned. The necessary bookkeeping is also coded, numbers representing the names of superstars, teams, etc. These codes are used primarily to make it tough for Federal law-enforcement agencies to get evidence. Formerly, bookies operating within the borders of a single state had no fear of Federal prosecution, but the enactment of the 1951 Federal gambling law requiring a bookie to purchase a $50
license stamp annually and pay 10% of his gross handle as a Federal tax changed that.
The 10% tax is highly unrealistic. As one bookie told me disgusted, "I would go broke in one day if 1 paid the 10% Federal bookie tax. Look what would happen when a player bets me $1,050 to $1,000 on a Pick ”em ball game and he wins. 1 lose $1,000 and must still pay Uncle Sam $105 for accepting the bet. If 1 take a $1,050 baseball bet on each of two opposing teams, I”d earn only $50 on the $2,100 worth of action, and would have to pay Uncle Sam $210. That would put me out of business in short order-so 1 don’t buy the stamp. 1 just pay Uncle Sam what he rightfully has coming when 1 file my income tax."

The nation”s number one sports betting online contest is the annual Super Bowl. The runner-up is, of course, the World Series, with the Kentucky Derby running third. Approximately $600 million changes hands on the Super Bowl game and about $500 million is wagered on the outcome of the World Series plus the single games. The largest single bet to this author”s knowledge was made by a Midwestern betting combine with a number of western sports offices. They wagered $825,000 on the outcome of a World Series game. A $200,000 wager is the largest single wager known on a Super Bowl game.

MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT BETTING SCALPERS

Many bookies who handle baseball action believe that scalpers (bettors who wager on two opposing teams in order to minimize their losses through some mysterious mathematical formula unknown to the bookies) have a sure-fire winning proposition when they scalp a World Series. As one New Jersey bookie told me, "Scarne, these baseball scalpers bet big on the Series favorite, then turn around and bet the underdog in each single game. They are sure to win money. How they do it 1 don”t know, but, believe me, they do it." This is like the old joke about the woman who thinks the department store loses money on every item it sells, but makes millions yearly because it sells so many thousands of each item.

This misconception about scalpers arose years ago when a sports office considered its price maker, or handicapper, not only a baseball whiz and a mathematical genius but a prophet to boot. They would quote a price and accept bets weeks before game time not only on the outcome of the Series, but also on each of the seven scheduled games. With this betting setup a sports scalper with a fair knowledge of simple arithmetic would seek a sports line on the World Series and the individual games from as many bookies and sports offices as possible.

He would then select the best price on the outcome of the Series and the best price on each of the individual games. This could involve selecting as many as eight prices each from a different bookie or sports office. By comparing the World Series price with the combined price line of the individual games, he could easily determine if the difference resulted in a minus or plus expectation. If it was minus he forgot the matter. If plus, he would bet his money with the different bookies, laying the shortest price on the Series favorite and taking the longest odds on the underdog in the individual games. This would guarantee him a profit, no matter what happened.

But the scalper can”t do this today because he can”t get a bet down on any single game until the day of that game; bookies only quote prices day by day on World Series games. The only sure thing about scalping the Series today is that the scalper is paying the bookie a greater profit because he is making a greater number of bets.

Creating a Sports Theater in Your Home

February 14th, 2012 5 comments

If you’re like me, I can’t seem to do anything just one thing at a time. I have to be able to do multiple things all the time and that includes watching sports events. Watching one sports event at a time just doesn’t work for me, I want to watch multiple sports events and Satellite Sports TV with the right TV makes it easy.

Using either a split screen picture, picture-in-picture (PIP), or multiple televisions you can watch several sports events at the same time. In the world of sports, this is really great because you can watch different sports events at the same time and then be able to switch between the sports events to watch the one with the action at the moment.

Today watching several sports events at the same time is a very simple process. To setup your own sports theater, you need a satellite TV receiver with multiple sports channels and a TV setup to display multiple sports channels. Satellite TV Sports allow you to have multiple sports programs on the same TV or separate TV’s at the same time.

If you want more than two sports programs at once, Sports Satellite TV also has packages where you can add additional TV’s, up to four per dish, onto one satellite system. This means you can be watching four different sports programs at once. Being able to watch four sports events continuously can really make you a sports authority. Being a sports authority means you can talk sports with anybody and having seen the sports event you will know what is actually happening.

Without a huge amount of money, you can watch up to four sports programs at the same time and do it within a reasonable budget. There are several different ways you can watch multiple sports programs.

One is using several TV’s and the correct satellite TV receiver to watch two to four sports channels at the same time. Satellite TV providers have receivers that will do either two TV’s or split screen of two channels on the same TV. Using this kind of satellite receiver, you can use a big screen TV to do side-by-side split screen or use multiple smaller TV’s to watch different receiver channels at the same time.

So, if you really want to be “The Sports Authority” and get all the sports events that you can handle, then going with satellite and multiple TV images is really the way to go. The two main things to look at are the TV’s and satellite TV receiver being used. Dish network provides several options including a high-definition DVR system that allows you to do split-screen automatically from the unit itself. This means using your existing TV, you can watch different sports events right on the screen at the same time.

If you want to have more sports, you can use separate receivers and multiple TV’s to get up to four sports events from one satellite dish. TV’s like the Mitsubishi 65 inch big-screen allow you to have split screen right on the television in a native mode. This means you can have multiple satellite inputs viewed on two screens and switch between sports events on the two sides. By setting up favorites on your satellite remote, you can then quickly flip between different sports events on each one of the split-screen sides.

To get even more events you can either add additional TV’s or get a different kind of TV that handles what is known as picture-in-picture. This will allow you to have multiple sports events on the screen at the same time. These TV’s tend to cost a bit more money and some models are a little problematic. So be careful with which TV’s you select for this particular methodology, but it can be great for watching multiple sports events.

The lesser expensive method is to simply pick up some low-end TV’s to use as side monitors and have your main television showing the sports program you want to watch at the moment. Use the side TV’s to monitor other sports programs on different receivers and switch to the sports event with action on the main TV when you see it happening on one of the monitors.

Using satellite TV receivers and a few TV’s, you can have a home Sports Theater that will make you “The Sports Authority”. So put your Sports Theater together now and start having those sports parties with all your friends.
