How do I become a photographer for an extreme sport magazine?

November 9th, 2012 3 comments

I’m an 18 year old girl about to graduate high school. I’ve always loved photography, and editing photos. It really is my passion. All my life I’ve been riding dirt bikes, bikes, skateboards, jet skis, and extreme sports. My dream job would to be a photographer for a dirt biking magazine or some sort of extreme sport!

But I was just curious how I would manage to land myself a job in that industry! Any tips or ideas?!

They will only buy shots that you own the copyright to, meaning you have to attend the events yourself and take the pictures, and then submit them to the company and ask if they want to buy them from you.

Once you have enough credibility in your career, you can apply to become a staff photographer, which usually means they pay to send you to events and take photos. At this point, you do not own the copyrights to your photos any more, the company you work for does, becuase you are taking pictures in the course of your employment.

If you stay an independent photographer, and people like your stuff enough, you can start demanding what people will pay for your photos. But that can take decades, and very few photogs reach that point.

Ok I am looking to find another action sport to do in my backyard or driveway. I (already) Dirt Bike, BMX, Scooter, Skateboard, Longboard, Ripstick, Paintball, Airsoft and Rollerblade. So do you have any good ideas for fun Action Sports i can do in my driveway or backyard?

Wow! Wouldn’t you think that would be enough? lol – I know how it is though, when you always want something new and exciting. Maybe you could make up your own sport? A friend of mine actually took apart some sport’s equipment (Skateboards, Bikes, Snowboards) and made them into pretty cool things.

If you have a trampoline you could take the wheels off of your BMX bike – pad and duct tape the bottoms and do crazy tricks and flips. Seen some cool stunts with those. =)

Information Regarding Action Town Sports Paintball

When was the last time you saw a BMX stunt team hard at work, or play? Flipping, spinning, head-over-heels action that gets the heart pounding and the kids yelling in excitement? If you haven’t seen such a show lately, you just might want to check out some school assemblies recently because BMX stunt shows are the hottest things to liven up school gatherings since, well, since they started having them.

BMX racing has been around for decades, but it’s never been the hot sport it is now. Nearly every town in America has a place for kids to race and skate to their heart’s content, performing moves that cause parents to cringe and kids to laugh. While most parents have forgotten how to ride skateboards or their memories of their own banana seat bikes, today’s kids are learning and performing moves that defy the rules of gravity.
