Express Action Sports

I don’t mean for like weddings or small stuff, but like sports photographers.
I took a class in photography last year, and I really liked it, but I dont have any room left in my schedule to take more advanced courses.

First thing you have to do is build a portfolio. That is, get out there and take pictures. If you want to do sport photography, photograph every kind of sport you can, and print out the best. Be really strict with yourself here, and weed out anything that doesn’t take your breath away.
Then approach your local newspaper and see if they’ll take you on a freelance basis. That’s usually the way you start. That means they will call you up to take pix when they are short of a photographer.
Or you can get out and take pictures of community sports, really good action shots, and see if the paper will buy them. Time is truly of the essence here — if there is a game on Saturday, they need the pix Saturday nite to get in Sunday’s paper.
Once they get to know you, they’ll begin to call you (if you’re good enough) and that gives you a line in to a steady staff job when one opens up.
It helps if you can do your own editing too — clean up a picture, and make sure it’s as sharp as it can be.

Im doing a seniore project and mine is on this and i was wondering how much schooling is needed and the requirements?

As far as I know you don’t need any. You just need a good portfolio. I would check craigslist under creative gigs. They usually have something for sports photography. Get involved with a local school and just shoot photographs of the teams.

I specialize in action photography such as sports, concerts, and other events. i haven’t attended college and have a portfolio i just dont know the process of getting a job with a magazine?

Regular photo jobs a very few and very far in between. Your best bet is to go meet the photo editor – and that may take some work – and make a good impression. Make some post cards and promo materials and start sending them to the photo editors on mags you want to shoot for. Send a different image for a couple of months then call and try to get an appt for a portfolio review/chat. Then go in, dress well, bring 10-15 pieces of your very best work and smooze ’em. Also a website is absolutely necessary, put the address on the card and put more work there.

Freelance is the way of the photographer. Try to hook up with a writer or two and shoot images to accompany pieces they’re submitting. This is a great way to get in the door.
