How do I photograph children sports events legally to sell the pictures to the parents?

January 31st, 2013 2 comments

I don’t want any model release problems, but I know I can’t get every kid’s parents’ signature.

How do other professional photographers do it?

My son takes pictures of kids in Pee Wee and High School sports events. He has a magazine in which he posts the pictures…he does not have to have permission if it is a public event.

I taught drill team for many years and we had different people over the years that took pictures at the event…then set a table up outside the gate and sold these pictures to the parents and friends of these kids, the following week. They did make money, I’m sure…. no one ever complained and all were excited to see and purchase the pictures.

Advice:
1. Don’t price them too high. These parents are out so much money for the sport itself, plus refreshments, and gate. Also, there are those parents without jobs or strapped financially and are really hurt when they aren’t able to afford pictures of their children.

2. Action pictures are great…but those expressions on the kids faces during the games are priceless.

3. If it’s at a school event…I would suggest getting permission from the Booster Club. Maybe offer free copies of the pictures for the annual..

4. Also, offer to take pictures of the kids with their parents or "best friends."

Good Luck!

Are the X Games ONLY for Generation X and Y viewers?

January 27th, 2013 1 comment

Will you get weird looks if your younger and are just into Motocross of they are? Or is it all good?

Quote:

"The X Games is a commercial annual sports event, controlled and arranged by Disney-owned US sports broadcaster ESPN, which focuses on extreme Action Sports intended for Generation X and Generation Y viewers. The games started in 1995."

Does that mean that group of people strictly? Or can younger people enjoy the games as well?

Thanks.

No, but the sports in X-Games do cater to younger viewers. That’s a very important demographic for advertisers to reach, so they support the games. If X-Games was of little interest and no one watched it would fail, due to the lack of commercial support.

What qualities do people need to do these dangerous sports?

crazy that’s really all just crazy

I want to buy a quality digital camera, what do you think is a great basic for photography?

January 1st, 2013 8 comments

I have been doing photography for awhile now, and just recently started a course, I dont want a professional camera, just a decent one. Could you tell me what camera you think is a great basic?

Hey Emma, you might find this post I made yesterday useful.
Of course it all depends on how much you are willing to spend on a camera, but here are a good few to get started on. These are all entry level to intermediate level SLR cameras.

You’ll have to convert the names and prices to US though if you’re there! the 450D is called the XSi in the US i think. Don’t get the XS (1000D, uugggh, terrible)

Post below:….

Also don’t listen to people saying Canon/Nikon are better, they’re all promoting their own equipment. They’ll deny it but it’s always true. Both systems are excellent with both having their advantages or disadvantages.
I shoot one system for my own personal work and one system with my 9-5 work. I’m not saying which one’s which 🙂

Personally I would go for one of these four options:

Nikon D80 – £399.00
Nikon D90 – £569.98
Canon 40D – £549.99
Canon 450D – £379.99

The D90 and 40D are the two superior cameras. However you may prefer to get a D80/450D and invest the remaining money on some accessories such as a flash gun or a lens or two.

If you are going to continue with photography, it’s good to start your lens collection now as they will last you a lot longer than your camera body which you will probably be looking at replacing/upgrading every 2/3 years. Save up and invest in good glass! BE warned though a good lens can cost a LOT 🙂

Here are links for all four, have a browse through and make your opinions THEN go try them out and hold them in a shop to see how they feel in your hand and which one you seem to have more of a connection to. That’s my advice 🙂

LINKS:

NIKON D80 – http://imaging.nikon.com/products/imagin…
NIKON D90 – http://imaging.nikon.com/products/imagin…
CANON 450D – http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_…
CANON 40D – http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_…

There’s a nice table half way down the page showcasing the differences between the two Nikons on the D90 DPreview website here:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond90…

The 40D is the largest of all of these cameras (similar size to the Nikon D300, but obviously not as good)
Here’s the Canon 50D (practically the same size as the Canon D40) side by side with the Nikon D90 to illustrate this.
http://a.img-dpreview.com/reviews/NikonD…

Personally I’m not going to tell you which one I would choose as it’s my own preference and my own style of shooting, which may be completely different from yours!

……Edit: Ok I’ll tell you. I shoot a lot of sports so I’d personally get the Canon 40D for its 6.5fps, mag alloy body and larger size but then remember that because that’s my style and fast action is what I shoot!, You’ll probably be completely different 🙂

In a nutshell all those cameras will serve you well throughout your entire course! Have fun trying them out in the shop!!.. and don’t buy a Canon 1000D or Nikon D40/D40x (shudder).

Hope I’ve helped 🙂

Should I make a paintball park in Chiefland, Florida?

December 30th, 2012 2 comments

I wanted to start my own paintball park. I know it costs money and you need a contract with the city, but should I make a paintball park in Chiefland? I don’t know if people living there will want to play paintball and I don’t want my money to go to waste.
Look, I know I need to buy paintbLL equipment, but I just want to know if anyone thinks the people in Chiefland will play paintball.

According to USA Today, Paintball is the fastest growing action sport in the US. From a financial standpoint I think anyone who is opening a paintball field is likely to do well. At this time I would say if you are ANYWHERE near people, you stand a good chance of being successful. I personally am willing to travel (and frequently do) as far as a 8 hour drive to get to a good field or game. I don’t think I’m alone in that. Good luck and I say "Go For It!"

Why do we not apply human ethics and morality to other animals?

December 22nd, 2012 10 comments

Please think about it. We slaughter animals for sport and for food, the way these animals are treated is inhumane.

Most commonly I’ve gotten the excuse that we treat them like this because they act wildly on their own. This is true, but we should not lower ourselves to their standards. And another excuse is because they are not smart enough. Well, what separates them from mentally retarded children then? If intelligence is the factor, how smart do you have to be?

And people who say this often turn around and say people who exploit and mistreat other humans of lower intelligence are unjust and immoral. But why, to the elites you may just look like breakfast.

Generally speaking, moral values are most stringent for yourself; then people around you / close to you; then people more distant, etc. In other words: in general, people believe that the welfare of those closest to them is the most valuable.

For example: most people believe that their own economic well-being is more important than that of others, and so will compete for a better job rather than cede a better job to one of their competitors out of concern for that person’s economic well-being that is above one’s own. When competing for a job, most people place their own well-being first.

The same is true of sports: generally speaking, a sports fan considers the record of their local (favored) sports team to be more important than that of any alternate team, and so will root for their favored team.

The same is true of nations: a person of a nation considers the safety and welfare of people of that nation to be more important than the safety and welfare of the people of a other nations, and so will support military actions in defense of their nation and will desire that the soldiers of their own nation are victorious over soldiers of the enemy nation, or will support economic policies that benefit their own nation at the expense of the economic advantage of other nations.

So a person’s moral values are much like the ripples made by throwing a stone in a pond: highest and most dear near to the person (the stone), less valuable and less dear the farther away from the person. For this reason, people generally morally value the lives of people above the lives of all other creatures. People believe that people adult should have the right to mate – but not pets, who are routinely "fixed". People believe that people should have the right to freedom from slavery – but not work animals, who are forced by indoctrination and pain and food to work at the whim of people. Etc.

In other words, most people consider people to be more important and more worthy and more valuable – from a moral standpoint – than any other species on the planet. It is actually a quite natural outlook, as described above: the well-being of one’s "own" people is always more important than that of others (self more important than immediate family; immediate family more important than extended family; extended family more important than city; city more important than state; state more important than nation; nation more important than world; humanity more important than other species; etc. etc.)

What are 3 things that you eagerly look forward to in your vacation abroad?

December 10th, 2012 3 comments

This question is not about routine things like travel arrangements, stay, flights, etc. which, if they go wrong, can surely affect your vacation and travel plans. This is also not about the feelings of goodness, greatness, thrill, etc.

This question is about the kind of specific vacation experience you eagerly want to have while on your trip, and its memories you want to carry back home. Things like seeing historically significant places, massage, Action Sports, sun bathing, and the like.

1. The food. I like to eat where the locals do, and shop in the local grocery stores for new things to try.

2. The architecture. I want to know about the buildings. How old they are, are they still used for their original purpose, did someone famous design them, or live there…..

3. The people. I would rather spend a week in one place getting to know the people around me than seven days in seven different countries.

What could be causing my knees to crack?

December 4th, 2012 2 comments

When I bend my knees they crack. People can hear it. It sounds gross. I have try glucosamine, but I noticed my knuckles started to look bruised. So I got concerned it was acting as a blood thinner.

Do you think I should see a sports physiologist? They don’t hurt. Btw I work out a lot.

It could be cartilage damage from a number of sources. It could also be a form of arthritis (please note this usually has associated pain) . I think it would be a good idea to go to a doctor and get an xray to check for this. It’d be cheaper in the long run than paying for physio treatment when you should be doing something else.
Another two knee problems, commen in young women are (in non science language) a condition called chondromalacia patellae where the cartilage softens and another I’ve forgotten the name of where due to misalignment… the femur rubs on the bone. Either way this website has good , easyread info… just use the links on the left.

I’d say go to a doctor before a physio and discuss ALL the possibilities. If it’s not causing you any pain, it’s likely to be minor, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Hope this helps….

When is Image Stabilizer more important to have?

November 20th, 2012 6 comments

Is it something that pays off when you take action shots? Or, is it as helpful when taking landscape photos?

IS can help when you need to take a relatively long exposure time which is not normally achievable hand-held.

The rough rule that people use is to try and not use a shutter speed longer than the focal length you’re shooting at. For example. Shooting with a 200mm telephoto lens, most people can hold it no longer than 1/200s to take a steady exposure. Depending on the version of lens, the same person may be able to take the same shot with a shutter speed as long as 1/25s with assistance of IS which is particularly handy in low light environments such as indoors when flash photography is not possible.

Some lens which are geared up to sports photography (such as the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS) even have a second IS setting allowing you to pan horizontally whilst smoothing your vertical movement.
