what is the difference between and Audio Engineer and sound designer?

January 19th, 2013 2 comments

I know about the AES and i’ve been reading up on the sound designers. I was wondering first off what is the difference between the two of them (Audio Engineers and sound designers)? What do each of them do? Are they involved in the Film, Music, Video Gaming industry? What major do I need to earn in college to work as each of them?

Thank you very much.

A Sound designer works mostly in theater and movies and yes video games, they create sounds That emphasize a particular action or event. Foley artists are sound designers in a sense. While audio engineers are the people who record the sounds created by a sound design engineer. I may be wrong but I think not, as a video producer (mostly Green screen music video) I have delt with Foley artists who have referenced themselves as sound design engineers. As far as school I can’t help you with that all I’ve learned has been in the business I started as a musician, in a one hit wonder band, toured Europe, Austraila, Canada and the USA. When the band lost popularity I had a keen interest in the studio sessions we had.I worked many years studying at home while working as a builder, slowly building my studio, learning audio and video along the way I have a small independant studio and do everything from recording local bands, video tapeing weddings and sports events, to doing music videos for cable TV and local TV stations. My advice is not to do it my way and go to school,I also had an interest in being a Foley artist that would be quite an interesting occupation

I would like to do more with the recorder like sporting events and family outings….I dont want to spend much but I really need quality footage. (Affordable yet with a pro-style look)

I like Cnet they do well in the reviews and are a good source as well….

As for getting a high end camera many use a cheaper camera as they are good prices and great videos only gig is the audio which many use a audio recorder on the side.

Sony Cameras are the ones many use in the HD area its a lot of money in the area of $4,000 min to upwards to 5 to $6,000

Xcorps Action Sports MUSIC SwitchFoot Bro Am 2012 HD

Xcorps Action Sports MUSIC SwitchFoot Bro Am 2012 HD – Home turf Encinitas California Moonlight Beach is the happening scene where the local rock band SwitchFoot is featured in this special segment hosted by the charmingly fun Crystal Fambrini.

Located right next to the Xcorps TV offices Moonlight beach Encinitas is the super scenic location for hometown locals and worldwide visitors to hang at a surf music event called the BRO AM featuring the band Switchfoot jamming their hometown fans for the 8th year in a row!

Check out the action and music in this Xcorps special where after the concert Crystal talks with SwitchFoot drummer Chad Butler about the band and the cause they back called STAND UP For Kids which helps homeless kids in San Diego. Recent SwitchFoot events including the Encinitas Bro Am pulled in over 200K for the national charity!

After that Crystal thros to a flashback interview that Xcorps producer Stu Edmondson did with SwitchFoot not long after they formed the group in 1999. Check out Chad and Tim Foreman being interviewed by local surf chick Swami Sandi at the now defunct Café East E in Encinitas. Kind of like seeing your yearbook photos!
Thanks to DEMA for the help with this flashback segment!

The segments wraps with Crystal talking more with the modern 2012 Chad about the lighthearted nature of the Moonlight Beach surf event called the SwitchFoot Bro Am where Rob Machado and Tom Curren jumped on stage for a jam or two! Nice drum close out shots of Chad Butler here too!
