what is a good starter paintball gun?

February 10th, 2013 1 comment

so im gonna buy a paintball gun to play. my friend got me into the sport and im going to go play with him at a paintball place. i just want to know what is a good strong starter paintball gun, my max is 100 bucks, im 15 so all i have is 150,

If cost is an issue, you may want to consider a pump-action gun (functioning similar to a pump-action shotgun) instead of a semi-automatic. In general, pumps cost half what a semi-auto does for the same level of quality. You lose rate of fire, but that’s not always a bad thing, since having to carefully pick your shots forces you to build skill faster.

Other advantages of a pump-action are cheaper ammunition costs, since you work the bolt, not an air ram, you get a LOT more shots per tank fill and you shoot fewer paintballs overall than someone who has the option to shoot hundreds of shots to compensate for being a bad shot. Pump-action guns are also generally simpler to maintain or repair, which makes cleaning and taking care of your equipment after the game a lot easier, especially for those who lack experience.

$150 isn’t very much money when it comes to paintball, which has costs (both up front and over time) very similar to golf, though precise breakdowns differ. My advice is to spend as little on the gun as possible, and as much on the mask as you have leftover after you buy the gun, CO2 tank, loader and barrel cover. A crap mask can ruin your whole day, when it fogs up and you can’t see anything. An awesome player with a crap gun will almost always outperform a crap player with an awesome gun. Get the cheapest loader you can find, since a pump gun doesn’t need anything fancy. And don’t forget the barrel cover, most fields won’t let you play without one (and get an actual barrel cover, not a barrel plug).

As for the CO2 tank, while a larger tank can be used as a rifle stock, you may want to consider a smaller (and cheaper) tank. A pump gun can get several hundred shots off a 4 ounce tank, and given the average rate of fire of a pump, 300-400 shots could last you all day.

If you do decide to go for semi-automatic, the last link (below) is for a decent starter package. The mask kinda sucks, and the gun is nothing special, but as package deals go, it gives you almost everything you need, with enough left over from your $150 for paintballs and a tank fill.

Sorry about all the tinyurls, Yahoo freaked out over the full links with a 999 error.

Is airsoft better than paintballing?

February 6th, 2013 4 comments

I’m wanting to do one of these sports one day but not sure which one, so which one is better?

Airsoft and paintball are two sports that should be able to coexist, but don’t. The sports both serve different markets. Paintball seems to entertain the people that tend to play "extreme sports". It is characterized by fast paced, hard hitting, action. Airsoft serves the more tactical crowd, who prefer teamwork and strategy over speed of action. Airsoft is also very commonly used as an effective tool for training in Military/Police forces. Also, I see a lot of people try to use the excuse, "people lie in airsoft since there’s no mark from the paint." I am an airsofter, but occasionally play paintball. And I have to say, I have come across more liars in paintball than in airsoft. Just because you get paint on you, doesn’t mean it won’t come off. I’ve seen many paintballers carry around wet towels to wipe of the paint to stay in game. Since there is no paint in airsoft, this sport requires more honesty and trust in your fellow players. So, in my personal opinion, I think you should pick up airsoft as a sport. It’s more realistic as a sport, the guns shoot harder and faster, the guns are more realistic, and its a ton cheaper. But, if you like running in circles, spraying at every thing that moves, by all means, pick up a paintball marker.

Should I make a paintball park in Chiefland, Florida?

December 30th, 2012 2 comments

I wanted to start my own paintball park. I know it costs money and you need a contract with the city, but should I make a paintball park in Chiefland? I don’t know if people living there will want to play paintball and I don’t want my money to go to waste.
Look, I know I need to buy paintbLL equipment, but I just want to know if anyone thinks the people in Chiefland will play paintball.

According to USA Today, Paintball is the fastest growing action sport in the US. From a financial standpoint I think anyone who is opening a paintball field is likely to do well. At this time I would say if you are ANYWHERE near people, you stand a good chance of being successful. I personally am willing to travel (and frequently do) as far as a 8 hour drive to get to a good field or game. I don’t think I’m alone in that. Good luck and I say "Go For It!"

What kind of video games for teenagers?

December 16th, 2012 3 comments

I have a 14,16 yr old girls and 13 yr old boy. What would be some good video games to buy for them? They have a playstation 2s. Any help would be appreciated!

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Probably the most well liked and popular game on the PS2.

Madden or FIFA games if they like sports.

Possibly SOCOM: Navy Seals if they like action games.

Or for less violent platformers (Mario like games) I’d suggest Jak and Daxter

What would be a good idea for a new extreme sport?
I am thinking of a game of hop-scotch in a mine field — may be in Cambodia. Would that be good?
It will help eradicate all the mines which are still maiming the population there

How do you get jobs as a professional photographer?

November 7th, 2012 5 comments

I don’t mean for like weddings or small stuff, but like sports photographers.
I took a class in photography last year, and I really liked it, but I dont have any room left in my schedule to take more advanced courses.

First thing you have to do is build a portfolio. That is, get out there and take pictures. If you want to do sport photography, photograph every kind of sport you can, and print out the best. Be really strict with yourself here, and weed out anything that doesn’t take your breath away.
Then approach your local newspaper and see if they’ll take you on a freelance basis. That’s usually the way you start. That means they will call you up to take pix when they are short of a photographer.
Or you can get out and take pictures of community sports, really good action shots, and see if the paper will buy them. Time is truly of the essence here — if there is a game on Saturday, they need the pix Saturday nite to get in Sunday’s paper.
Once they get to know you, they’ll begin to call you (if you’re good enough) and that gives you a line in to a steady staff job when one opens up.
It helps if you can do your own editing too — clean up a picture, and make sure it’s as sharp as it can be.
Good luck!

I just got a Nikon D40 with the 18-55/55-200 lenses. What settings should I use to stop indoor sports action?

August 14th, 2012 4 comments

I am a real novice. Only used a point and shoot before, so please don’t get too technical on me. I’m trying to shoot indoor volleyball. I bought the camera to eliminate the shutter lag, but now what?

You should find yourself using the 55-200mm lens more often than the 18-55mm. The 18-55 is useful for wide shots of the game and the crowd but will do little to bring in any action.

Since the lenses you have aren’t very fast (open the aperture as wide as possible) and the games are indoor you’ll either need to use a flash or a higher ISO (ISO 800+ should be adequate). Keep the shutter speed as fast as possible to minimize blur. The pop-up flash is nice but will not help you at a distance. I’d suggest buying a Speedlight or a cheap slave at the very least.

If you have no idea what I’ve just said, just use the sports scene mode and the camera should automate everything for you to the best of its ability.
