How did paintballing start and catch on as a sport?

tdcassick1 is right. Paintballs/markers were originally designed to paint cattle and trees at a distance. The color of the paint would determine what action would be taken for the marked object.

Guys being guys they started shooting eachother. This grew in popularity and eventually evolved into the original "survival" games. Progress took this to "woodsball" and woods tournaments then into field tournaments. It’s continued to progress since.

The original paintballs were much harder than the ones today and really hurt when they hit you. They were filled with an oil based paint that rarely came out of clothing, or off skin, without turpentine or some other paint thinner. When I first started the pump pistols were the main markers, though semi auto markers were making it on the scene. It cost $50 to play at the indoor range and this got you the marker rental, the goggles (no full masks, just goggles), 2 ten round tubes of paint (plus the one in the marker), and 2 12g CO2 cartridges. If you wanted more they ran approximately $5 for a ten round tube of paint and $3 for a 12g cartridge.

What paintball package would be best for coming back to the sport?

I was on a local rec team for 3 or 4 years. I started off with a Tipman and then had various AirGun Designs Markers (AutoMag, MiniMag, MicroMag and AutoMag RT) using CO2 then upgrading to compressed air. I don’t see that AirGun Designs markers are advertised much anymore in the paintball publications like Action Pursuit Games. When I was on the team I also had the ability to get things at cost through my friends store. Now its all out of my own pocket. I have placed a Worr Game Products Autococker Trilogy Sport Player package on hold at Dick’s Sporting Goods as I have always known them to be good markers, yes a bit finiky more so then any marker I have ever used especially my AirGun Designs markers. What would a good marker and basic items package be for me?

Well it depends on what are looking for out of a gun. If you’re playing speed ball I would recommend an Ion. They are fairly cheep and worth the money. Now if you can afford an Ego or a high dollar gun thats up to you but really its up to you. The Trilogy is a good gun they are much better than the old cockers as far as messing with them goes. Good luck.

What Paintball Gun Should I buy for Christmas! Please Answer?

well the most important part is I need a gun that can take CO2 because the places near me only supply CO2, I will not take a pump-action gun, I would most rather a semi-auto gun with a light trigger but I will take an accurate automatic gun. My Budget is no more than 350$ at the very most and also I just play with my friends but I am pretty good my basic kills in a day with a party of around 8 people and we average play about 10 games I get 20+ kills and I’ve only been playing for a couple of months so this is a pretty good sport for me so I would like a nice good gun I dont need a pro gun unless it fits these standards. Last but not least my family knows nothing about the cleaning process (and paintball for that matter) so please don’t reccomend really really difficult guns to clean. Thanks and please respond before Christmas of 2009 🙂

I would defiantly recommend a tippman A-5 or 98. cost about 180 stock so you could get some nice upgrades with the rest of the cash. They are the toughest guns you can buy and the easiest to clean, built out of metal with no eletric or computerized parts making them indestructable, reliable and to clean you just take out a few screws then it splits in half and wipe down the parts with water and a rag and lube it up then put it back together. and with the right barrel and a regulator they are as accurate as any gun on the market. The only disadvantage is they have a low rate of fire compared to higher end speed ball guns. They will shot as fast as you can pull the trigger but some of those high end speed ball guns have extremely light trigger pulls, and can even be set up to so you can shoot with two different fingers alternately making them twice as fast, and then they can be set to fire every time the trigger is pressed then fire again once released, so combined they shoot 4 times as fast as a standard trigger. but if your on a budget like it sounds like you are, then you want accuracy not rate of fire. the guys with those guns canl go through 500 rounds in a couple minute match.
