Summer internships related to Recreation, Sport & Tourism and Communication?

February 17th, 2013 1 comment

I am a senior double majoring in Communication and Recreation, Sport, and Tourism. I have had a summer internship with NBCUniversal, but want to focus more on the Recreation and Travelling aspect of my degree.

I LOVE traveling and my dream job would be to get paid to travel or go on roadtrips. I love meeting new people, emerging myself in new cultures, and working with others. I am outgoing, fun, and a very big people-person.

I am looking for any crazy/wild/fun job ANYWHERE that is PAID. I am interested in extreme sports, traveling, roadtrips, event planning, marketing, recreation, leisure, etc. I want to gain experience in the field. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions I would greatly appreciate them.

Ideas: Wounded Warrior Project, Red Frog Events, Spartan Race, Truth.com, buzzfeed, TOMS shoes, anything non-profit as well (anything similar/related would be awesome)

Okay, so, you want an "internship" that sends you to some exotic locale, covers your expenses, and pays you on top of that? Congratulations, so does everyone else 🙂

Seriously though, these type of things are few and far between. There’s opportunities to volunteer, opportunities to intern, opportunities for paid internships, and opportunities to travel, but very rarely do any of these things intersect. Many charity organizations will take you on and assign you to wherever there is a need, and they may even cover your room and board and a small stipend, but the caveat is that you have to pay to get there, and go where they tell you. You can work teaching English in Asia, even if you don’t know the local language, and you’ll get paid to do so, but again, you have to get there yourself and take care of yourself once you’re there. Try to check with your school, perhaps they have some resources that aren’t commonly known and can point you in the right direction.

Good luck.

Camera to take action shot both indoor and out door?

January 27th, 2013 1 comment

I am looking for a good camera to take fast action shot basically to use during games like basketball, volleyball, football etc. The camera must be able to take indoor sport photo as well. Please help me out. Thank you.

Good quality action photos in low light situations means you need a DSLR – no P&S will really perform well in those circumstances.
Outdoors on a bright day just about any camera will do a reasonable job.

How do you become a sports writer?

January 23rd, 2013 6 comments

What does the job include? How much money do they make?
I wrote an article for the school paper and my teacher brought up this career that I never thought about doing.
Thanks.
I’m a huge baseball fan. I love the Red Sox and know a lot…most would say too much about them.
I like basketball and football too. I know the general rules of those games and some key players on teams I like.
How much would this help me?

Read about various sports, become familiar with the jargon used & all the different writing styles for each particular sport. You wouldn’t really get to focus on one particular sport until later on in your career. Keep a journal & practice writing (or blogging today I guess). Attend live sporting events; think how U would approach writing the story for the local newspaper/major newspaper in the area, or Sports Illustrated (two different styles) — and then write that story (or those stories). Now, compare your story(ies) to what was actually written in the paper & SI. Is there something U missed? Did U see something that they missed? Learn what makes you a good writer and capitalize on it. Your style is your signature.

Take photographs at sporting events as well. Learn about good composition, exposure & capturing the action. Whether U move from the print realm into the video realm these basics will help you develop your eye for the action).

Money-wise, U won’t really see the big bucks unless U are really good & usually later in your career with national exposure. Most sports writers do it for the love of sports. Starting out at your local paper as a "freelancer" or a summer intern could help U decide if this is the right career choice for U. U won’t know until U try.

Best of luck to U.

can you use an Xbox controller for a PC?

January 21st, 2013 6 comments

I ask because I have just bought PES 2008 (pc edition) but my controller which I bought from GAME doesn’t use the regular buttons to operate the game e.g X is for through ball.

Will I have more sucess with a Xbox controller?

Yes, the Xbox 360 controller can be used in Windows (XP SP2 or later, incl. Vista).

The connector for a Wired XBox 360 controller is a standard USB 2.0 connector and can be plugged in and will be recognised by Plug & Play (Windows Update will install the latest drivers the next time you run it).

For an Xbox 360 Wireless controller you need a ‘Receiver’ – basically a USB Dongle that plugs into your PC to communicate correctly with XBox Wireless Equipment.

Most newer PC action / sports games (and all Games for Windows titles) should have support for the XBox 360 Controller Layout. I believe PES 2008 has a controller profile already for the the Controller.

Older Games that you can ‘remap’ your Controller can be used to remap to buttons on the XBox Controller – but some of the buttons (e.g. the Triggers) may not be possible to assign to functions.

Microsoft do sell a packaged "XBox 360 Controller for Windows" – but this is just a bog standard XBox 360 controller with the Windows drivers on CD – just buying a standard 360 controller and plugging it in, then going to Windows Update does the same thing – and is much easier to find.

How important is image stabilization when researching getting a digital camera?

January 19th, 2013 4 comments

do you think it’s a requirement or just a marketing tool?

It’s like autofocus and autometering. The greatest photographers in history didn’t realize they had lousy cameras and took magnificent pictures anyway!

I love the VR (vibration reduction) in my Nikon 18-200mm lens. And I recently bought an HP point & shoot for a relative that had built in IS. After all, she’s 80+ and isn’t the steadiest when taking pictures.

If you’re taking action shots, it’s a plus. If you’re taking portraits or scenics, it’s not. Here’s some sports photos I took WITHOUT any stabilization, except for using good photographer’s techniques.

That being said, I would still look for it, just as an added feature. Many wouldn’t live without it.

Is there a digital Camera which captures a picture instantly?

January 17th, 2013 7 comments

I’ve had loads of trouble with pictures etc, every time i go to take a picture of a moving image ie. a horse, by the time it takes the horse has moved out of the picture! it drives me crazy!

You problem may have a lot to do with what is called shutter lag. All P&S cameras have lag to some extent or another.

http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/shutter-lag.htm

Those who shoot action or sports photography use DSLR cameras … their shutter lag is measured in milliseconds instead of seconds like P&S cameras are.

What kind of digital camera should I buy? SLR or really good P&S?

January 11th, 2013 6 comments

I’m going to school next fall for sports journalism, so I need a good camera. I am also living in the rocky mountains for the summer and would like to get some nice shots out there… I’m not sure if I should get an SLR, or a really good Point and Shoot. I don’t know very much about photography and I need a user friendly camera to learn on.
Thanks!

There is NO really good P&S that will do the things you need your camera to do as a sports photographer.

* P&S cameras have sensors that are over 15 times smaller than a DSLR, 30 times smaller than a 35mm SLR
* P&S cameras come with one lens and that is it. SLR’s and DSLR’s use interchangable lenses … from fisheye to 600mm telephotos.
* P&S cameras suffer from shutter lag making catching the action in sports nearly impossible.

You will learn a lot about photoraphy in school ..

Before you buy anything, talk to your instructor(s) and see what camera you will need to use for your classes. My guess is they will tell you that you need a 35mm SLR to start and after a few classes, you may be able to buy a DSLR to add to your "sports" lenses …

There are NO user friendly adjustable cameras … thats why we get the big bux.

While as a student, you will not be required to supply your own 400mm f/2.8 lens (over $7,000), you will be expected to know how to get rock steady images.

My other guess is that you will end up with either a Nikon or Canon 35mm SLR … you can buy them used on craigslist for under $200 with a decent normal zoom lens (24mm-70mm is common)

What controller should i get for a PC?

January 3rd, 2013 2 comments

Ok so I am thinking of getting PC video game equiptment because my friends recomend it and i was what controllers would work and how to use use them on a PC. Alot of websites say to use xbox 360 or ps3 controllers and give a long list of downloads and requirements for them. Is there just an easy and simple way to get a controller and use it without having to download or buy new software? And which would work better… a regular pc, xbox, or ps3 controller?

Thanks

The Xbox 360 controller is definitely the best! Any game with the "Games For Windows" label on the box will work with the controller by default & older games require a program like xpadder, but they’re easy to use.

Also, don’t let people tell you that the mouse and keyboard are always better, because that is a false statement. I guarantee any sports, racing, or action/adventure games will be better with a controller. Mouse and keyboards should only be used for shooters and role playing games.

Oh & to get the 360 controller to work you either have to buy a wired one and plug it into your USB port or you can buy a receiver for a wireless one.

How can I improve my sports photography pictures indoors.?

January 3rd, 2013 2 comments

I have a Kodak Z981 Camera and I was looking to take pictures of the volleyball games and basketball games at my high school but when I try all of my pictures are like foggy and fuzzy. I have had it set on Sports mode and several others. What can I do to improve the quality of these pictures

First you need a dSLR camera.

It needs to have at least a ISO range up to 3200.

And you need a relative fast lens.

Here is a sample when shooting with a 24-70 mm lens indoors

You will notice that there is some blur, but it is not objectionable.

Always shoot with your camera on its highest resolution settings possible and with the white balance set to the lighting where you are shooting.

The problem is that you are shooting with a P&S camera with no manual settings available.

Can someone please link me to videos of Wing Chun effectively being used/demonstrated?

December 28th, 2012 3 comments

Hi everyone.

I can barely find any Wing Chun fighting videos. I would like to see it in action. Please link me.

I am planning on going to a Wing Chun school some time to check things out for myself, but until then, I’d like to know more about it’s effectiveness through the power of the interwebs.

Also, please don’t get angry by assuming that I don’t believe it to be effective.

Very few schools train in an effective manner, they have the same problem by and large as many places ie a huge focus on static drill training that has a complying partner throwing a known punch under which the defendant does a sequence of moves & not on effectively applying this to a moving resisting opponent.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t some serious trainers in it (Bruce Lee started off with this art for eg though he never did become largely profecient in it). Merely that many schools of it do not realistically train & will try reel you in with flashy moves. Also as far as im aware it doesn’t train in a sports environment thus there would be few videos of combat on YT, rather demos & lessons etc
