Whats a good wireless flash trigger set up for a Nikon D3100?

December 28th, 2012 3 comments

I do a lot of sports and action photography, specifically snowboarding and skateboarding. What is a good quality wireless flash trigger that will work with my Nikon D3100? I would like something compact and light weight to avoid any clutter in my backpack. Any suggestions and/or stores/links would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Amazon has a non OEM remote that has been rated highly & cost less than Nikon’s unit. Keep in mind the wire less function works only in line of sight.

What should I buy my grandpas and my dad and my uncle?

December 22nd, 2012 2 comments

Actually, I need gift for both of them. I feel with women I can always get them pretty scarves or jewelry (you can’t have too much!) but it’s impossible to find gift for the male members of my family.
Why would my grandpas want ties? They are retired. And my neither my uncle or my dad wear them to work either.

Whats a good camera for outdoor use?

December 22nd, 2012 6 comments

I’m looking into getting a camera for takeing pictures at sport events (mostly paintball) and I need a camera that can take good pictures while the person is moving….. And any upgrades?. Aslo no camera over like 375

Go for the GoPro HD Motorsports Hero.It is especially made for dynamic sports so it takes great action shots and it is well under your budget. Features include:
Professional-grade full HD video up to 1080p
60 frames per second option in 720p and WVGA resolutions provides liquid smooth slow motion playback
Videos can be easily edited with iMovie or Windows Movie Maker
Industry’s widest angle (170º) and sharpest lens captures more of the scene, including you
Includes easy-to-apply mounts for attaching camera to any helmet, motorcycle, car, ATV, jet ski, snowmobile, boat, or virtually any vehicle.
Impact-resistant housing is waterproof to 180 ft (60 meters)

What camera would you recommend for a photography beginner?

December 12th, 2012 6 comments

I’m intrested in photography and I am just wondering what camera you would recommend for a beginner? 10mp + please and the less the better.
I am aware of megapixels and I would like more than ten because my compact camera is 10.2 and if I’m getting a new camera for more money, I want it to be better than my current for a lot of reasons.

It just came out on November 4, 2008.

It’s an all-in-one 10.1 megapixel digital camera which includes (i) built-in image stabilization; (ii) HD720 quality video [Quicktime] which permits zooming while videoing skateboarding, Action Sports; (iii) a 18x zoom [27 – 486 mm (35mm equiv.)] "Leica" lense for nature and concert photography; (iv) up to 0.39 inch macro option; (v) up to 6400 ASA; (vi) takes up to 380 pictures per 120 min. battery charge; (vii) has a "burst speed" of 13 fps; and sells new for $430 at amazon.com. in the U.S.

What are some good cameras for a beginner with photography and video capabilities?

December 4th, 2012 4 comments

I am new to photography, but I don’t want a cheap-o digital camera. I want a real one, not one that families might use for pictures to send to grandma. I would like it to not only be a good photo camera, but be able to take video for more than 30 seconds. Anyone have any suggestions?

What is a good camera for taking videos at concerts?

December 3rd, 2012 2 comments

Okay so I have a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-S780. It takes pretty decent pictures but when I take videos at concerts, the sound is horrible. I was looking at some live footage on YouTube and some people have cameras that have really good quality sound. I don’t want those beastly video cameras, just a digital camera. Any suggestions?

What would the best selection be for a LCD or Plasma TV for an office conference room?

November 26th, 2012 4 comments

We would be putting up spread sheets and the like on the screen as well as power point presentations.

What features should I look for?
Brands and models would be appreciated. We are looking in the 47" or so range.

You totally need to be careful about getting caught up in hype over features that make watching TV or movies or such better. That’s not going to be an issue for you. But can add significant cost. So you can ditch those things and save a tone of money.

So ignore 120Hz/240Hz rates. Great for sports, action movies, and gaming. Way overkill for your needs (and adds a lot of $). Ignore LED LCD. Again great for other types of uses, but way overkill for you (and huge expense). But do go with LCD. I think that’s far better suited for the kind of corporate uses you talk about (a Plasma would be good if you were a TV production company only).

But I disagree with the other comment about 720p. I think you should go for 1080p to get full 1920×1080 resolution. Your LCD TV is just there to serve as a really large scale computer monitor really. So I would go with one with greater resolution incase you need it. If you want to tone down the resolution you can, but at least you have the option to do 1920×1080 if you want.

Definitely look out for VGA or DVI ports. That way its easy to hook up laptops to the TV. Most sets in that size range will have such, but just double check.

I would look to Samsung, Sony, Sharp, or LG at that size. I think you’ll get a good option from any of them. They are all top tier brands. As for some example options,

Samsung LN46B530 – 46" CCFL LCD 1080p 60Hz – http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LN46B530-46-Inch-1080p-HDTV/dp/B001U3Y8OU/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1257205600&sr=8-4 – $1,074 Amazon

Sony KDL-46V5100 – 46" CCFL LCD 1080p 120Hz – http://www.amazon.com/Sony-BRAVIA-KDL-46V5100-46-Inch-1080p/dp/B001T9N0EO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1257205829&sr=1-1 – $1,099 Amazon (normally I wouldn’t bother with the 120Hz, but Sony gives it to you here at a decent price)

Sharp Aquos LC46D65U – 46" CCFL LCD 1080p 60Hz – http://www.amazon.com/Sharp-Aquos-LC46D65U-46-Inch-1080p/dp/B001E8YQ1Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1257205920&sr=1-1 – $950 Amazon

All of those have VGA PC inputs. So you’d be in good shape. Any of those would serve you well. I kind of like the Sony option as it falls within a similar price range as the others but adds in the 120Hz. Again, while not necessary for your needs, it could be had for a decent price and so if you ended up showing something with some fast motion on it for some reason, it would be a bit better suited than the other choices.

Also use cnet.com to do your own review checks if you want.

How do I choose a good Digital SLR camera for sports photography?

November 16th, 2012 5 comments

My main area of intrest is taking action shots and sports photos. Can anyone help or give me some suggestions to what I should be looking at? I’m planning to buy, but I don’t have an unlimited amount of funds, if you know what I mean. As a matter of fact, I’m kind of strapped. Any suggestions on the best deal with greatest performance?

The main things you want to look for in cameras for sports photography are;
Frames per second – lower end Nikons and Canons have around 2-5 FPS. It all depends on what you need for the speed.
Lens selection – You may be strapped for cash now, but what about a year from now? You want to get a camera that has a huge selection of compatible lenses so next year you can get that 600mm lens if you want.
Zoom or telephoto lens – These are nessecary in sports photography! Personally, I’d go for the zoom as it’s more versital.
A steady tripod – stay away from those aluminum pieces of junk. You will need something that isn’t going to break anytime soon. The more you zoom with a camera, the more chance for camera shake. I got a great carbon fiber one from amvona on ebay $40. (don’t buy direct from their website.)

I don’t know what your actual cash situation is but if I needed to stay on a tight budget, I would go for this setup:
Nikon D40 – $533.28 from Amazon
Nikon 70-300mm zoom lens – $483.54 Amazon
Amvona carbon fiber tripod – Around $40 from ebay.
SanDisk 2 GB, Extreme III SD card – $34.99 on sale at Adorama

If you have a little more in your budget, I would upgrade the camera body to a D80 or D200. The D300 was just announced so the D200 price should drop quite a bit (most likely in October or November)

If you’re more of a Canon type, you can find similar setups in the same price range from them as well.

Good Luck!
