The time has arrived for Max and her winged "Flock" to face their ultimate enemy and discover their original purpose: to defeat "Re-evolution" – a regime devised by Itex’s director to forge a genetically superior race to humans and to wipe out the rest. As the Flock discovers more and more about Itex, it becomes clear that they will have to put a stop to it some way or another. However, the Flock is separated due to a head conflict between Max and Fang over letting Ari stay with them (whose expiration date is nearing and is soon to die). On top of that, Itex has resorted to using what has been dubbed by the Flock as ‘Flyboys’ – winged mechanical replacements of Erasers who are now retired (killed).
Max’s group is able to infiltrate Itex’s main compound (which is in Germany), but is soon captured. Fang tries to rouse support from his ever growing base of fans from his blog, and also tries to catch the attention of the public to the situation, but is not very successful at the latter, further delayed by attacks from Flyboys. However, when he eventually learn’s of Max’s situation, he is able to get a group of his fans to the Itex compound, where Max and her part of the flock are able to create havoc and destroy the Flyboy fleet while all of the Fang supporters are able to break down the compound from the outside.
At the compound, Max learns that Dr. Valencia Martinez, of whom she met earlier, was actually her biological mother, whilst Jeb Batchelder was her father. She also learns that the voice that she hears in her mind is really Jeb. Fang, Max and the rest of the Flock finally reunite, promising to never separate again.
The fate of the Director, the other experiments at Itex (such as Max II), and Itex itself remain unknown, but it is presumed that Itex was disbanded and appropriate members prosecuted.
