Just visit a lot of Sport- and Athletic games. Make a lot of shootings, then send the best to a Sport magazine or a main News paper. They will tell you what can be better or give advice.

Good choice! sports photography is very interested career, first you need to learn the basics of photography, there is many schools that teach u the art of photography, after that u need to get a lot of money, sports photography require an expinsive equipments, such as the camera and the telephoto lenses, other lenses required too, wide and normal…..

Sports photography is a great field, but is very competitive. Start by working for your school newspaper or yearbook, shooting your school’s games. Your school may have some good equipment, and your advisor can help you learn to use it to obtain the best results.

When you are at the varsity games, there may be a photographer from the local newspaper there as well, especially if you are from a smaller town. Introduce yourself and tell the photographer that you want to specialize in sports photography. That photographer may offer you advice or instruction on getting better photos.

Consider talking to your local newspaper about an internship. These are usually unpaid, but you may be able to arrange school credit. Internships are learning experiences where the staff of the newspaper helps you learn the trade in exchange for your time.

As you gain experience, you will get better photos. Keep the best ones in a portfolio. As you begin looking for work in the field, you will have present this portfolio (or electronic copies) to prospective employers as examples of your work.

The key to sports photography, especially action sports, is speed. You will need to stop the action in the photo, or at least slow it to an artistic blur. To stop the action, you need a LOT of light, either natural or from high powered flashes. You can also adjust the film speed to provide more light, but you can end up with grainier photos.

Finally, if you are serious about this, expect to pay some pretty serious money for the professional quality equipment. Very few newspapers provide each photographer with their own equipment, and their staff equipment is usually very basic. The long telephoto lenses you see at football games are $3000 to $5000 each, and camera bodies can run as high as $7000 each. You can certainly start with less expensive equipment, and get fine results, but to compete on the upper level of photographers, you will need to buy the good stuff.

Dan Sweet gave some solid advice but I’ll offer a few more things. The school newspaper and yearbook offer great opportunities to get something published. Since you are in school you get unique chances to get practice photos and what are called sports features.
How are the players dealing with heat? Do they have little routines they perform prior to and after the game?
Don’t stop with what is going on during the play watch for the reaction/emotion after the play is complete. Keep an eye on the sidelines and see if the coach gets in the face of a player and offers to sit him on the bench. Don’t get me wrong ACTION is the name of the game but there is more to sports than a ball and the route it takes to a player’s hands.

Offer different points of view. What would the action look like from above?……below eye level?…..against the lights? Keep your action cropped tight. Try to remove any distractions from the frame…..an out stretched hand….a random foot……a ball boy standing on the sideline with his mouth open.

Dan is correct about the equipment. High end digital photography gear is VERY expensive. But the price comes down all the time. You might try going ebay but even starting DSLRs aren’t cheap. Look for a Canon 20D or a Nikon D-70. These will provide quality results. Buy the best glass you can afford. You can trade up camera bodies and use the same glass.

If you really think this is what you want to do in life……just shoot and shoot and shoot. Don’t get too frustrated with missing the shot. It takes years of practice and a little bit of luck to be in the right plae at the right time. Scan sports magazines…..some of the best shooters in the world are contract photographers to Sports Illustrated. There are so many publications that are specific to individual sports you can narrow down photos easily. Take a close look at how the pictures are cropped and how they relate to the words.

Get to know the players. I’ve had photographers standing next to me at SEC games that could predict with pretty good results the location of the reception because they have seen the formation so many times during practices. These are the guys who live and breath sports and their interest and effort shows in their work.
