How to take action/sports photos and keep the subject in focus?

I set my Nikon D5000 to dynamic range mode and I have to choose which of the 11 focus points I want to use. However when I take pictures of someone or something moving it’s hard to get the focus point to be on the subject and when I take the picture the point was somewhere else and the background is in focus but not the subject. My camera has a 3D tracking mode too but not in M exposure mode.

When I am shooting sports, I use the AF-L button to hold the focus on a certain player by keeping my thumb on that button.

Look on page 43 under "subject tracking", Auto Focus Continuous (AF-C) on page 54 and 155 of your user manual for other information.

put auto focus on continual and subject in centre…

also, depending on the distance, put the aperture on something like f/5.6 to f/8…
