One of the oldest sports in America that has got everyone hooked is horse racing. There is no doubt in mind that a lot of people find joy and excitement just by watching the race. On the other hand, there are also those that found that they can really double their money just by choosing the best horse. But then, if you are one of those who have little money to spare, this is not something that you should venture into.

From your reading, you will have an idea which horses are best to bet and which ones to avoid.
2. Survey the horses and the racetrack personally.
Aside from reading the reviews, it is also advisable to personally check out for yourself the horses that will be competing. You can do this by visiting the racetrack early on when it is already open to the public.
SEE if your favorite horse looks good and well conditioned on that particular day. Watch out all the horses’ movements and check if they are in high spirits and are capable of running a good race.
While there, you can also check out the racetrack itself. Do an analysis of the whole scenario. From your perception, you will be able to tell the initial result of the race just from looking at the place it will be held.
3. Money you can afford to lose.
Horse racing is a gamble. And just like any other gamble, money can be lost in an instant. Always bear in mind that in this game, there are always winners and losers. And you can become one of the losers.
Be sure that the money you gambled in horse racing is something that you can afford to lose. Even if you feel that you are on a winning streak, luck can change course any minute. As long as the race is not yet over, anything can happen and your money is still on the line.

What do you think about this horse?
So, I am riding this horse at the barn I am at and he is being sold this weekend. We have this amazing connection between us. His name is Bears he is a 13 year old 16.2hd. Registered Thoroughbred. He is a chestnut color and has the greatest personality. His grandfather is Secretariat. My trainer and I really don’t want him to leave so she asked if I wanted to buy him. He is 10,000 but I maybe splitting it with her for 5000. If I share with another girl in the barn then it’s 650 for everything a month and if he is all mine he is 1300 a month with training and food and everything. He is one of those guys where you don’t have to ride him for a week and then ride him and he is exactly the same. He was a ex racer but was never raced. He used to sit in his stall a long time so he would weave. He is a little head shy but not over the top. He is overall a really sweet horse. He has his lead changes and he is really comfortable at all gaits. So anyways just wanted to give you some background info on him. I am going to get the vet to look at him and give him a thorough checkup before and then we will see:) He is a show horse and jumps up to 4 feet.
I am very much ready for my own horse.

i forgot to add that the lady said he is very lazy and then as you get him going he gets going too.
oh and we are going to look at his past show experience. The lady said he won champion with one of the girls in the barn that were worth way more expensive than he is.

my personal opinion he is over priced i would not pay near 10,000 for him, hes pretty inconsistent at his gaits it seems, or maybe its just the rider..
EDIT: i would pay at most 4,000$ for him, with 10,000 you could buy an amazing horse ready for the show ring with a nice headset and nice consistent gaits. i also wouldnt pay that much for an ottb just because they are broke at yearlings and start training to race which is terrible on their joints and can cause problems later on which is probably in a few years for him.

I can’t see the video, but to be completely honest, that is extremely overpriced. I would never in my right mind pay that much for a 13 year old horse, that is just wrong. Even $5000 is a lot unless he’s a big time winner in the show ring. Regardless of you being attached to him or not, even though it’s hard, it’d be much worth your time I think to look into other horses.

If he is a gelding, then $10,000 is way too much money. You say his grandfather is Secretariat; however, you did not mention anything he has done that makes him worth $10,000. He is definitely overpriced!!

Tough situation! On one hand, it sounds like you and this horse really click. But on the other hand, it sounds like somone already intends to buy him… What if the other party buying him really likes him and plans to give him a good home and suddenly the deal falls through? That happened to me once on a OTTB Thoroughbred and I can’t say I respect those particular people very much anymore – we were getting close to paperwork when suddenly the deal was off – it left a bad taste in my mouth for that particular facility.

You Can Tell That You Have A Strong Bond Together, But $10,000 Is Wayy To Exspensive. The First Jump You Went Over You Were Going To Slow, But He Knew And Sped Up. I Think Go For It, If You Can Afford It. Nothing Is Better Than A Bond And You Will Regret It If You Don’t Take The Chance. He Even Looks Like Secretariat. 🙂

Well, everyone is rite, he is wayyy to expensive especially for a gelding. I would say he is worth around 3,500. He seems well tempered and seems to be sound. I show horses all across the U.S. and I can tell you rite now he is NOT a show horse. He could be but he’s a lil to old to start teaching "show" stuff. If you were then you would need to teach him to collect and use himself and the maine thing.. getting his head down and leveled. My horse is at the trainers rite now getting trained. It really depends what you want to do with him. Do I think hes a nice safe horse? Yes I do, especcialy being off the track. Do I think he is worth 10,000? no. You can uy a awesome real show horse for 10,000. Like I said, I would spend no more then 3,500 for him.

I am old enough to be suspicious of deals like this. You trainer doesn’t want him sold and might buy a half share in him. This can mean that things get complicated. Who will compete on him at shows? Who will have a say in what he does and doesn’t do? If your instructor wants to compete on him then she might want him with more spark to him and stuff him full of oats so he is no longer the quiet horse he is at the moment, making him to much for you to ride.
He is not worth the money at his age.
He might have won a championship but it could have been at a minor little show – and even if it wasn’t it means nothing as it was a long time ago.

A few things to consider that none of us can answer for you:
Do you feel safe on him? Does he have any problems that you’ll have to work through? Have you ridden enough other horses to know that he IS the right one for you? And, can he take you where you want to go, (be it showing, trail riding, whatever), and possibly move up in the levels with you?
If yes, then:
He sounds like a wonderful horse. $10,000 seems a little steep to me, but as I’ve never met him, he may be one of those who’s worth it. You can buy a completely finished, ring ready horse for $10,000 too. I guess the biggest thing is, if you don’t buy him, will you have the feeling like your heart has been ripped out and will you regret it for a long long time? Age is not a bad thing. With age comes wisdom and confidence and reliability. He may not be able to do 4 foot courses for the next 10 years straight, but you never know! By the time he can’t do it anymore, you may discover a new sport interest, like dressage or trail riding which he could do. If your heart and gut are telling you to go for it, do.
Geez people stop ripping on geldings!!! It really irks me when people say, "Oh, well, they aren’t worth it, they’re only a mare/gelding/insert breed/age/height." Ever heard of John Henry? $6 million+ in earnings and a gelding. Or what about Steffen Peter’s Ravel? Phillip Dutton’s Connaught? Beezie Madden and Authentic?

missed out on that $10k horse… I’m still sad whenever I think about him (yes he was over priced, but i knew exactly what I was getting and he would have been perfect for me) 🙁
He is a GREAT horse! The rider seems to be handling him very well. I think that he is overpriced and maybe $3000 would be a better price. Even though his grandfather is Secretariat doesn’t mean that he should cost that much. A $10000 horse is a horse that has won many shows, and does VERY well in whatever he naturally does. In the video it show jumping, so $10000 would at least be jumping 3ft+ and be EXTREMELY good at advanced shows, and constantly bringing home medals, ribbons, and trophies, or whatever you get.

You 2 REALLY seem to click! If you really love him and it feels right in your heart (and you can afford it), then I would go for it. The bond that you and your horse have is most important! Personally I think $10,000 is too much, but that’s because I wouldn’t be able to afford it, but if you can and you really do love him then I’d say he’s worth it. Also the fact that he’s Sectretariat’s grandson is soooo cool, and I can tell that he’s related to him too, he looks so much like him!!! 🙂
