What are the main difference between all three of the Canon Rebel cameras?
I love taking pictures and my brother has the nikon D40. I’ve taken lots of pictures and I really would like a Canon instead of a Nikon, I know the T1i has HD video taking option, but what is the big difference between the XS and XSi? Aswell I would like the cheaper one but I want one that can take good close up’s and I love taking action shots, like sports (hockey, skiing) What would you recommend? Pro’s and Con’s.

The XS is a base model with a 10.1MP CMOS sensor (better for low-light than Nikon D40/D40x/D60/D3000 – which all have a CCD)
The XSi adds live view ( but focus is much slower in LV mode) and 2.2MP more.
The T1i adds HD video but won’t AF in video mode, so you must focus before recording & hope your subject doesn’t change distance or manually focus. It also ups the resolution to 15.1MP.
The lens matters more than the camera (all three should work for you). I’d recommend getting it at a camera store as they will help if you have any problems (try getting photo help @ Walmart).
The Rebel XS is an entry level camera made to be sold with a cheaper price tag.
The Rebel XSi is an "older" version of what the T1i used to be, means the T1i is created to "replace" the XSi. Easier way to understand would be:
T1i = New Rebel
XSi = Older Rebel
XS = Baby Rebel.
Good close-ups depends on what lens you use, not what camera you use, so they are more or less the same. But for action shots, not too much to pick but the T1i does have ISO3200 to choose (but not advisable).
"My" recommendation:
T1i = You need video, big and nice LCD screen
XSi = You don’t need what T1i offers you.
XS = You want to take good pics with the least money, and you know extra pixel doesn’t really give you much advantage.

The XSi (450D) was released in early 2008…the T1i (500D) is simply an update, released earlier this year.
The XS (1000D) was released around 6 months after the Xsi…it’s very similar (not quite as good with less features, but still ok). This was mainly to make it very affordable for first time dSLR users.
I use the 450D (XSi) and really like it. I have no need to upgrade at this point in time. Maybe when the next model comes out (or the 60D maybe).
The T1i does record Full HD video (1920 x 1080), however it’s only at 20fps and the audio quality is fairly poor. It also records HD video (1280 x 720) at a better, 30 fps.
Any of these dSLR’s should do…but, you also need to seriously think about the lens you will be using. The kit lens is ok for starters, but no good for action. You’ll need to spend much more than the price of the camera body to get a fast enough telephoto lens for indoor sports like hockey. So, you need to consider the extra costs involved if you want a more capable lens.
For continuous shooting, the XSi can shoot up to 3.5 fps (up to 53 continuous Jpegs), XS can shoot up to 3.0 fps and the T1i, 3.4 fps (up to 170 continuous Jpegs). A high speed SDHC card is required for optimum speed.
For portraits or low light, I recommend the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II (it costs less than US$100) or the better, EF 50mm f/1.4 USM.
