Questions about the pricing of Adobe After Effects. Can you help?

I’m looking to edit Action Sports video with Adobe After Effects. I’ve never worked with the program, but I have done some research and the program seems more than sufficient for what I need to do. On the Adobe website, After Effects CS6 is priced at $999.99 USD. There is also an option for a Subscription of "One-Year" that is priced at only $19.99 USD. I got the initial impression that a One-Year subscription would be the full program but would expire after one year of activation, but the pricing of the one-year subscription seems absurdly low in comparison to the regular price. What’s the deal about the subscription? Also, would there be a large price differential in an older version of the product? Perhaps if I bought CS5 as opposed to CS6, would I save cash?

Thanks in advance for helping.

The subscription is a monthly payment of $19.99 ($239.88 per year).

There would be a small price difference between the current and earlier versions.

After Effects is for special effects, animation, colour correction, etc.
