Is there less diversity of video gane styles now than there was 12 years ago?

i think so. it seems to be mainly fps and action adventure games now. but back in the day, there were combat flight sims, rpg (3 or 4 diff styles) as well as the great games of sierra, real time and turn based strategy etc, etc, etc.

just seems like a shame that most of todays games look/play almost exactly the same.

Not all of them. FPS games and sports games all look very similar obviously, but you find more diversity if you take the time to look at every games released in the last 5 years. It’s just because FPS games are the most popular right now and we are seeing a flood of them.

    In the late 80s and 90s almost every game was pretty much either a 2d platformer or a scrolling shooter for consoles. Maybe PC games were more diverse because PCs were more versatile and more niche, so developers were experimenting with games more, but most of those other genres, like Sierra adventure games kind of stagnated because there were so many of them being produced and so few of them were any good.
