I am looking for a digital camera for action and sports shots?
Looking for an SLR under or around $500
I take a lot of pictures at sporting events like grappling, wrestling and jiu-jitsu tournaments, as well as MMA and boxing events so i’d like something that can take very good action pictures with with sometimes not perfect light.
preferrably have a video function
i’ve been researching the Panasonic DMC-FZ18S for these preferences… anyone got any suggestions
go for 350d canon
or pentax k100d
or if you can offered
go for canon 20D
very good models for sports photography
I recently bought a Sony DSC-H9. I love it’s action shot and video capabilities.

You want something with about 10 mega pixels. I have a Kodak V803. It has 8.0 mega pixels and it takes pretty good action shots. I have a 3 year old and I’ve only had a few come out blurry. It takes great video too! Also Kodak’s software is pretty easy to run.

Whoa! Hold on every one.
The only cameras suitable for shooting sports and action photos are the 35mm SLR’s and DSLR’s.
* The huge reason is because their shutter lag is less than 50 milliseconds so you don’t miss shots.
* The other is that you can attach very long lenses to them to get those amazing shots like you see all the time in SI and other magazines that cover other sporting events.
Second …. NO DSLR or SLR as a video function … you will have to buy a different camera for that.
While Panasonic digital cameras are great for general photography, they in no way can be considered a camera that a professional sports or action photographer would risk his/her reputation using when timing is everything. The Panasonic DMC-FZ18S is NOT a DSLR, but a SLR-like camera, so has a much smaller sensor and you cannot interchange lenses
While you can find an entry level Nikon D40 for under $500, you will still need a lens (at least a 200mm, although the longer the better)
