What do you consider as a good Lens for indoor sports photography? ?

Also, what are some other needed equipment for capturing action shots?

I have a Nikon D80 with 18-55 mm lens and 75-300mm lens.

For outdoor sports photography the 70-300 mm VR is an excellent lens

For indoor sports photography, I use the 70-200 mm f2.8 which is fast enough.

My friends who shoot NBA games usually include the 200 mm f/2.0 lens in addition to the 70-200 mm f/2.8

You shouldn’t really need anything other than what you have right now. At 300mm, which is more like the equivalent of 450mm, you are close enough to the action. You will likely need to increase your iso to at LEAST 800…. the good news it the nikons are great for shooting at high iso settings.

You need to be able to anticpiate where the action is going to happen, then set up your camera and wait for it, NOT chase the action around with your camera, hoping to get a good shot.

    I use a 70-200 2.8 Nikon lens with my D80. It’s beautiful!

What you have now will work.

Try to keep your focal length under 200mm and you should do fine. At 300mm your lens becomes a complete piece of junk.

Up your ISO and use shutter priority to ensure good shutter speed. Post process as you see fit.

good lenses for sports photography (professional) start at f2.8. It would depend on what you are shooting, ie boxing 1.4/50mm or 1.4/85mm. For longer lengths, the Nikon 2/200 is a superb lens and so is the 2.8/300 (with a superb price to go with it).

If it is just for your own use, the what you have now will be adequate.
