How good is the Sigma 300mm f/2.8 versus the Canon 300mm f/2.8?
I’m getting into sports photography at the semi-professional level and was wondering if anyone has used the Sigma 300mm f/2.8 lens. The price difference is over $1000 and I’ve heard at times that the Sigma lenses are much better than they were in the past. Anyone’s thoughts or comments?
I actually use that Sigma lens and can tell you that it is great, I shoot with a Nikon but it’s the same lens as it would be for Canon. Obviously if money is no object always go with the same manufacturer of your camera for your lenses but personally I would say this lens is well worth it especially if you need to watch your expenses. I shoot a lot of sports action and have no complaints about the Sigma lens at all.

You Should Get The Canon Lens..
only because if the lens causing a problem on the camera, and you didn’t drop it, or anything of that nature, you’re still eligible for canon’s warranty. Because it’s a canon product. However, canon doesn’t cover a third party lens on the warranty..
so, if something happened with the Sigma on the canon camera, you coudn’t get it done for free. personally, i’m only using Nikkor brand lenses for my nikon camera, because i’m not risking any problems, i know that i can still be eligible for warranty..
because you’ve spend so much on this lens, and a camera, it doesn’t make sense to risk the investment now, because that would be a huge loss, and waste of money.

The biggest benefit of using Canon or Nikon is the fact that their lenses are so good. The Sigma is completely capable, however, but may be a bit soft wide open, and have problems with CA in the corners. The Canon is more versatile in more situations. I’m not saying the Sigma is terrible, but just that it is not as good as its Canon counterpart.
You may be completely happy with Sigma, or you might come to find out the Canon would have been the better choice. If you are in fact at a professional level, the price of the Canon lens is very little when compared to the quality you’d be getting back. I guess what I’m trying to say is that if you know what you’re doing, you could easily make up for the costs by marketing your skills.
