Y doesn’t affirmative action?

apply to professional sports? For example, why is it ok to insist that the overall population be reflected in business jobs (yes, most make LESS than professional basketball and football players), but not in pro ball? What percentage of African Americans play B-Ball and Football with 6 digit salaries compared to the overall population? If whites in ANY field, regardless of ‘abilities’, were to dominate, they would be REQUIRED to allow a proportionate percentage of minorities into the positions, regardless of abilities…no, I’m not racist, just seeking genuine equity. Y??????????????

All men are created equal. (Women too, I believe!)

Whoever said that they remain equal for the rest of their lives?

Perhaps all are *not* equally gifted at sports when the come to the playing field. Or should the NFL be required to have equal numbers of women and men?

This entire question is ridiculous!

All adults are NOT equal in every respect!

"regardless of abilities?" In athletic competition?

Don’t make me laugh!

I think affirmative action has become outdated. We used to need it, but now we don’t. Now its just causing reverse discrimination and more problems than it solves.

Affirmative action is a tricky subject.

On the one hand, we definitely still need it. There are plenty of closet racists out there, and there are hordes of openly sexist and homophobic people. Society has not matured enough to take off the training wheels.

On the other hand, where’d you draw the line? I wouldn’t want my fire department to have a "quota" of women. That said, if a certain woman is genuinely strong enough to be a firefighter, by all means, she should be a firefighter. I don’t care who lifts me out of a burning building, so long as they can lift me.

As for pro sports, ideally I’d organize it in the same way as a fire department. No quotas to fill, but if a woman is genuinely good enough to play in the NHL, it’d be backwards and old-fashioned to stop her.

That said, it is true that women are (as a rule) physically at a disadvantage to men. So I don’t know what I’d do about individual sports like downhill skiing or weight lifting.

    Like I said, tricky subject.
