Would you deem affirmative action as a success or failure up to this point?
I think affirmative action has done a little good, but I think it makes a grievous error.
I think it is pushing a lot of unqualified and uneducated blacks into positions of authority: like teachers, policeman, firefighters, doctors, scientists, etc. If the black has the necessary credentials then great.
The one thing affirmative action assumes is that all races are unequivocally equal (And I’m not talking from a value perspective, we all have value) I am saying that we are not all the same, physically and mentally. I don’t think all whites should be taking the jobs of asians if they have more scientists. Certain races have their strengths and for blacks it may be sports. We are tampering with evolution and I think it’s dangerous.
It has been a success, most notably in helping women advance in the areas of business and education.

I believe Affirmative Action assumes that if only white males between the ages of 25-35 are deemed eligible to hire, then the majority of people in the USA would be on welfare right now.

I take the opposite position. I think that it is racist toward African Americans because it puts them in positions simple because of their race. It’s just like saying, "You can’t get a good job because you are black and inferior."
Same thing for women. Sexist with a capital S.

I think it is unconstitutional, regardless of it’s "success."

When I went to college, students that scored less than me and made lower grades were more likely to get scholarships I applied for simply because they were black.
I didn’t like it one bit.

Affirmative action causes more trouble than it is worth. We integrated our schools and tell our kids not to judge others by skin color, then we take and give rewards based on skin color? I have seen it personally during the hiring practice. We sent home a young kid who did everything right and spoke two languages and had a degree because we were short on our minority percentage. We hired a black person who wasn’t even close during the interviews with a GED.
Can you imagine if we put a certain percentage of whites on each football, baseball or basketball team even if they couldn’t play as well. Or adding 1.2 Asians on each team. We should be judged by character and ability not our skin color. Judging by skin color divides our nation.

I agree. It did help a lot of people in the beginning when discrimination was so common, but to continue it indefinitley is a mistake and I have seen cases where unqualified people were put into positions they weren’t qualified for. That’s an injustice to them and everyone else. Now it’s time to end affirmative action.

You from Alabama or Mississippi, or maybe Virginia?
I don’t believe there’s any difference in cognitive abilities of any race.
There are differences in community and social values that make a difference in the direction of learning interests and Development.
I don’t believe affirmative action has benefited that much because I believe it’s demeaning and insulting to people to treat them differently and offer advantages not offered other people solely because of race.
Educational benefits should be offered to anyone of any race who fit a certain criteria such as disadvantages, income, etc.
thanks

I guess it would be better if women and non-whites were still being legally discriminated against.

Are there individual cases of success from Affirmative Action? The answer is Yes. Has it been a success for the masses? No. Affirmative Action needs to be looked at again by a Congress that is willing to evaluate, negotiate and compromise.
In other words, there is no chance it is going to fixed in this political climate.

Women and minorities were never LEGALY discriminated against. However Affirmative Action legally discriminates against White males. It’s a giant neon sign that says “White males are so much better than the rest that everyone else needs government help to compete” It just assumes that Women and Minorities are inherently inferior and wouldn’t stand a chance in hiring if not for government intervention to force employers to hire them. It’s demeaning to those it supposedly helps, and it fosters a sense of lazy entitlement in those who know it will insure they get a job, regardless of how little effort they put into achieving. As a White male, I know for a fact that it forced me to work twice as hard to get my spot in the Fire Academy as the minority female sitting next to me in training.
It had it’s place in the 70’s, but now it just serves to make White Males work harder to achieve what women and minorities are handed without effort.
