ugghhh…. get an slr….

as much as i hate digital slrs….

i feel like the art of photography is completely lost… people take like 3 rolls worth of pictures in like 5 minutes withe their digital slr.. and pick out 2 pictures…. i stick with my 35mm slr..

I would recommend a DSLR…like the Canon XTi. P&S only if you don’t care about how you take pictures…and picture quality is not that important to you…DSLR is more like an investment…you will use it a lot more if you love to take picture with a DSLR…you will not be happy if you buy P&S then find out later you have to upgrade to DSLR….

There is NO really good P&S that will do the things you need your camera to do as a sports photographer.

* P&S cameras have sensors that are over 15 times smaller than a DSLR, 30 times smaller than a 35mm SLR
* P&S cameras come with one lens and that is it. SLR’s and DSLR’s use interchangable lenses … from fisheye to 600mm telephotos.
* P&S cameras suffer from shutter lag making catching the action in sports nearly impossible.

You will learn a lot about photoraphy in school ..

Before you buy anything, talk to your instructor(s) and see what camera you will need to use for your classes. My guess is they will tell you that you need a 35mm SLR to start and after a few classes, you may be able to buy a DSLR to add to your "sports" lenses …

There are NO user friendly adjustable cameras … thats why we get the big bux.

While as a student, you will not be required to supply your own 400mm f/2.8 lens (over $7,000), you will be expected to know how to get rock steady images.

My other guess is that you will end up with either a Nikon or Canon 35mm SLR … you can buy them used on craigslist for under $200 with a decent normal zoom lens (24mm-70mm is common)

Get an slr. You’ll need it for sports journalism anyway. You’d be frustrated in a very short time by how limiting those little point and shoot cameras are. With an slr, you can get a variety of lenses to suit different settings.

Now you get to choose which brand to go with. Find a camera store that has a wide variety of cameras and lenses (not a department store or even an electronics superstore). Tell them what style of photography you plan to do (I’m assuming sports) and they will help you out. Try out different camera bodies and see what’s comfortable in your hands. Then be good enough to actually buy there and not turn around and buy it online. Here’s why…

The same people who help you pick out a camera will be there for support after the sale. This is important too. You can show them your pictures and ask for advice. If you have any problems, they can talk you through them by showing you on your camera. And when you want to upgrade or get new lenses, they can help you.

i suggest something between them,a camera like Canon G9.it shape is like p&s but actually it works like(and just like) a slr.there are many pre-installed features that will help you in photography and also some manual settings that let you to experience your ideas.the lens is fixed but it covers your needs from wide to tele,and it can accept adapters for ultra tele.also external flash.the other option you have is canon s5is.this one looks like a slr but works like G9.this piece of jewel with 12x zoom lens,8 mp,awesome handling,video recording,pop up flash and the ability to accept external flash is sth beyond any non slr camera you could imagine.both cameras are $400 to $450.
