Rear Projection Television and DLP Technology
Are you looking for a big screen TV with a not so expensive price tag? Then, a rear projection TV is one option you should consider. When it comes to combining low price and high performance, rear projector TVs are the best. Though there are several projection technologies in use, Digital Light Processing (DLP) projector technology is the most popular one.
Advantages of DLP Technology DLP technology, originally developed by Texas Instruments, incorporates an optical semiconductor called the DLP chip. With this you can expect superb black level performance and deep saturated colors apart from excellent image uniformity. Televisions with DLP technology deliver bright images, so you can place them even in well-lit rooms. The ultra-fast DLP chip also makes them ideal for watching sports and fast action.
The rear projection TV houses a projector, which streams the image from behind the screen. A DLP projector has four main components, namely a color wheel, DMD chip, light, and optics. The DLP TV lamp is the main light source of a rear projection TV. A DLP TV lamp has so many positive aspects.
First and foremost, these projection TV lamps have a much longer life of about 70,000 hours when compared to Plasma TVs. The next big advantage is that replacing a rear projection TV lamp is not so expensive. It is also simple and takes only a few minutes. So do not panic when your TV starts going dim. All you need to do is replace the DLP TV lamp. There is no better place than BulbToGo.com to look for a good projector replacement lamp.

Overall, what is the superior Television set technology – LCD, LED, Plasma or Rear Projection?
Note: Mainly, the best for overall Television set picture quality.
P.S. Is there any other current Television set technology(s) which I haven’t named?
OLED

rear protection is rubbish they are large bulky tv’s
plasma tv’s are the best,, NOT lcd/led crap due to plasma tv’s have a deeper black and that gives a better picture quality

OLED is the most exciting future technology and one to definitely keep an eye out for.
I currently own an LED TV and the quality is amazing. I owned an LCD for long-time (and I do a lot of research into my purchases) and it was no where near as good. Plasma’s are good if you plan on getting a very large screen. They process images the fastest out of all of them, making it really good for watching sport.
Overall I decided LED was the best for me, simply because the picture and colour contrasts are jaw-dropping. It can more than keep up with sport but the best part of the TV is watching in high-definition. Avatar on Blu-ray is really a thing of beauty. Plus, it’s really thin!

I tend to agree that right now Plasma is better than LCD even though LCD has gotten very close.
But – right now for about $5,000 you can get one of those new 4K projectors from Sony.
Commercial movie theaters use 4K digital projectors and Sony has come out with a home projector that is native 4096 resolution – 4 times greater than 1080. It will up-convert 1080 as well.
If you have a good screen, if you have total light control in your room and if Sony did a good job with the up-conversion – then the new 4K projector might be the superior image. (It will also be larger).
(Home Theater magazine has a review in their current issue. Go get a copy).
Short of that – Plasma from a good company (Panasonic or Samsung) is probably the best technology.
Now – Higher end LCD models have come close to rivaling the image you get from a Plasma display. The old "Best image possible" used to be the Pioneer Kuro Plasma – but they stopped making these a few years ago. They have been working on a LCD version of the Kuro and some claim to have seen prototypes. But with a suggested retail price of $6,000 – you could buy 3 other televisions the same size and with great image quality for the same price.

Rear projection is dying out. Front projection is a niche for full blown home theatres, although largely used commercially and institutionally, so deals can be had.
For direct view sets, Plasma is best but only available in larger sizes, and not as power efficient.
LED and LCD are the same, with LED or fluorescent backlight. LED backlit are generally better.
LED are the best overall value, for purchase price, quality, and efficiency. Many of the whiz-bang features are only coming to LED LCD, because that is all the major manufacturers make for that class set, and the low end manufacturers generally make only basic TVs.
OLED in large sized commercially available sets are coming next year.
