I got booted from a shooting range for "rapid firing" of my bolt action?
I got myself a Marlin 981t bolt action that holds 17 rounds if they are 22lr, 25 rounds if they are 22short.
I made some home made "speed loaders" from plastic tubes and foam ear plugs.
I get to the range, take the rifle from the case, dump one stick of 17 rounds of Remington HP and start firing on this target at 25 yards… http://www.birchwoodcasey.com/sport/images/Products/47026_lrg.jpg
Five shots, 4 hits and one to reset. The Marlin is sweeeet! I did the 5 shots in about 40 seconds. I do it again, about 30 seconds. I realize a bunch of people are looking at me. I did it as fast as I could, about 25 seconds. There’s still two shots left in the rifle. I’m 25 hits for 25 shots, open sights.
The range officer asks me to empty the gun and not come back until tomorrow! I broke the "no rapid fire rule". I didn’t know they had one! I’m tuning up to join the metallic silhouette league that runs 8 matches, March, April, May, June then August, September, October, November. One match a month.
Like I said, it is sweeeet. It was $189.99 the dealer cleaned it and laser sighted it for 25 yards before I picked it up.
Isn’t the whole point to do this fast? Why do you think they REALLY kicked me out. Do you shoot silhouettes? How fast is fast? Thanks.
duh, 15 hits for 15 shots. Not qu**r. 33 years old, married, small business owner, almost "successful".
You must be in a blue state. Even in the purple state of Pennsylvania (Blue in Philly and Pitt, pretty Red everywhere else) people get worked up over magazines over 10 rounds. Dumping the home made speed loader of 17 rounds would freak me out. Hitting a 1" target at 25 yards is OK, but if it was something I graded, it would only be a C-.
You sound like a kid, and probably act like one, they kicked you because you’re probably unsafe.

All ranges have rules. Five shots in 25 seconds with a bolt action rifle is rapid fire.
As with any set of rules or laws, ignorance of the rules or laws does not excuse you from breaking them. If that were the case, any time someone was arrested they would say they did not know the law and be able to get off.
Now you know about that particular rule. I suggest before you return to the range you read all the rules so you do not break any more of them.

Are you the fat buff guy at the gym who stares in the mirror and grunts as youre lifting just to get attention? People dont like show offs. 25 yards isnt a big deal. If you miss then you really suck. Its kinda like hitting the floor with your hat 5 times in a row. Grow up dude…

I think it is pretty common to have a no-rapid fire rule. All the ranges I’ve been to have it, generally 1 shot every second or two is the most allowed for safety and supervision reasons. That probably is the range masters "real" reason.
For rapid fire practice I go out in the desert or woods where I’m basically alone.

I believe you got the boot for violating the range rule. Its either in your club’s handbook, or posted at the range itself, or both. Don’t get all fired up that you hit a target from 25 yards, as silhouette shooting goes out to 100 yards, and that’s what you should be practicing for—only a bit slower please.

Shoot at 100 yards targets then 25 is nothing… And just to make sure, they werent looking at you because it was an archery range were they? haha

From the way you worded this question I think that you not only violated the range rules but you drew un-needed attention to yourself.
Most guys go to the range for serious reasons such as sighting in thier rifles, testing thier firearms after repairs and honing thier skills with a firearm.
If some newby is out there making a spectacle of himself by breaking the rules and acting like a hot shot while accomplishing little (Yes they can even tell when your thinking "I kick @$$, I’m awesome!!!") they will report you to the range master.
It’s very possible that you were so in tune with your own shooting that you completely missed a signal or two for a cease fire so that other shooters could go downrange and check or repalce thier targets.
Basically you were being rude, unsafe and not considerate enough to read the rules first.

Most of the people there were probably Elmer Fudds that wish "your kind" couldn’t even own a gun.
This is why I hardly ever shoot… You quickly learn that "gun people" are primarily ignorant, self absorbed fools.

Most ranges have their rules clearly posted. If you had been paying attention you would have seen them.
While it is completely possible to "rapid fire" safely and effectively, most ranges have rules prohibiting it due to liability concerns, and to discourage reckless behavior. This isn’t to say that anyone engaged in rapid fire is being irresponsible, but there are a lot of irresponsible people who go to ranges.
Sanctioned matches are closely supervised, and as such often allow faster shooting.
I enjoy shooting .223 caliber carbines and semi-auto pistols. Training usually dictates that you fire quickly and accurately. Since most ranges prohibit this, I go to gravel pits, friend’s houses or find ranges that allow faster fire.

You must have violated their rules. I don’t see where 12 rounds per minute is all that fast. My oldest son used to shoot my .30-06 Remington 700 at close to 20 rounds per minute when he was 12. That was hitting a target at 100 yds or so.

If they thought you were being unsafe AND stupid they would have kicked you out for a long time.
A one day kickout is no big deal, it is a way of saying ‘remember to read ALL the range rules BEFORE you start shooting’
Could they have cut you a bit of slack? Maybe…but maybe the range officer had to just kick out some total moron who was spraying bullets like crazy and who WAS a problem, then felt to be fair he needed to enforce the rule vs everyone, be they accurate or not.
